A Brief History of the Morgantown Fire Department
In 1857, a concerned citizen bought two ladders and four hooks for fire fighting.
In 1897, thanks to Alexander Graham Bell, a modern alarm system became possible- it consisted of 24 telephones installed in the homes
of 24 volunteer's. The phones were equipped with a centrally located alarm control, which set off a loud alarm in the volunteer's
home to get his attention. Things really got moving in 1919, when the city purchased a "modern" truck to replace the horse-drawn
equipment.
Today, the city is protected by a force of 47 full-time firefighters, located in three stations. The best in
modern fire fighting equipment is available to them, including 12 specially equipped trucks, a Haz-Mat trailer, a Gator for the Rail
Trail emergencies and a Boston Whaler Fire Rescue boat. Over 600 fire hydrants, located around the city, provide an abundant
water supply, and in addition, our trucks are equipped to deal with more complex fires with a combination of chemicals.
